Mount Sutherland Nebbiolo 2014

Mount Sutherland keeps surprising us with unique treasures and they have gone & done it again! Native to Northern Italian region of Piedmont, Nebbiolo is the grape behind the famous wines of Barolo. Although typically light bodied & full of fresh red fruit flavours, high tannin means this Italian beauty often needs time to age before she blossoms to her full potential. That's exactly what we have here, 7 years of ageing has resulted in a wine that is silky smooth, strawberry & cherry flavours complimented by intricate earthy & spice notes. Just 600 bottles of this exceptional wine were produced.

Mount Sutherland

The town of Sutherland is a small and remote farming town known for three things, being the coldest town in South Africa, sheep farming and the home of the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. At this point you'd be forgiven for wondering what telescopes have to do with wine? The answer is simple, location, location, location! 9th Generation winemaker Danie de Waal started producing wines on the high altitude hills (1500m) of this secluded town because it's low average temperatures cause a slow and extended ripening period. The result of which are intensified flavours and sharp levels of acidity, perfect for varieties like Syrah & Tempranillo.
